Wondering how to deeply nourish the strands?

The glands inside the scalp are in charge of secreting the natural oil that nourishes the hair strands. This natural oil lubricates and seals the strands for that silky soft feeling. But natural oil only gets as far as three to four inches from where the strands begin, leaving the ends dry and without any oil.

Oils are one of the latest insider beauty trends that everyone is loving. Not only are they a great addition to a skincare routine but they’re also great for the hair as well (although I’m sure our grandmothers already knew this).

What is "hair oiling"?

Deeply soaking the hair with oil may sound contradictory when one is battling an oily scalp. Oiling consists of applying a generous amount of a warm oil onto the scalp and spreading it evenly down the strands all the way to the ends, leaving it on for at least a few minutes before washing it off.

WARNING! Do not microwave or overheat the oil! Place vegetable oil to a “bain marie” in a glass container and just warm it up very little.

What are the benefits of oiling?

Oils are great lubricants and sealers for hair strands, that’s why hair is less frizzy after applying a few drops of oil.  Some oils, like olive oil, are rich in Vitamin E and fatty acids which form a protective layer for the strand helping it retain moisture.

Giving the hair a deep, nourishing oiling treatment once in a while (maybe every two weeks) will surely leave your hair feeling soft and looking shiny and less frizzy.

What are the risks of oiling?

The scalp and follicles have a very specific purpose in terms of general hair health. Changing the conditions for your scalp might also change the way it’s supposed to work. Applying too much oil directly onto the scalp could potentially reduce the amount of natural oil production within the follicles, creating a cycle of drier scalp that will demand those oil treatments more frequently after every application.

An over-oily scalp attracts dirt and promotes fungus growth. Oils are hard to dissolve or clean with water, and so residues from oiling can cause a bigger problem if they are not properly cleansed thoroughly.

What is the texture of your hair when it dries naturally?

The right balance

The general recommendation is to do oiling treatments for your hair with 100% natural vegetable oils, sporadically, and avoiding over-saturating the scalp area.

Do so for specific occasions like before undergoing a harsh chemical process or before using a strong clearing shampoo.
